On a distance the bedroom floor looked OK, but up close you could see big holes.. And it might show even better after I painted it white...
I dont want to remake the whole floor, so I hope some more paint will make it look a little better...
Now to the children's room..
Like I have said before there were splines on the sides, so I used quite thick "planks"
I had a hard time cutting the planks to fit around the small wall in the middle. Its not beautiful, but it works, and since I was going to paint it I thought it wont show...
I should have saved it like this... but I painted it white. And since I thought white was a bit boring I thought of painting squares, in blue..
And then I started thinking.. Since this is a children's room, I will have lots of toys and stuff lying around.. and that might give a messy impression, if the floor is squared... so I tried wiping it of.. but that was harder than I thought...
And then I gave up!!! So this is what it looks like now..
And instead I started on the 1:144 log cabin =) I'm still working on that and I hope to show more pictures of that later this week =)
But now, what am I to do with that floor?? Please leave a comment what you think I should do.. I have no clue..
Should I finish painting it blue and white? or should I repaint it white? or maybe have faded blue squares like in the last picture? or something totally different that I haven't even thought about??
Hope you can help me with this =)
Take care
Hannah
Hey Hannah, I think the floor in the last picture is looking perfect for a children's room, the soft blue is very lovely! So to my humble opinion, you may treat the whole floor like you started out; aplying the blue and then washing it away slightly (or use a self-made stamp with pale blue on it) Really, I love it!
ReplyDeleteI know it's hard not to get disencouraged when looking at someone else's work; there are so many outstanding and very talented miniaturists on the internet. I can feel uncertain and unhappy about my work too sometimes....but you know, everyone has his/her own style and I always enjoy your freshness and enthousiasm. It takes time and patience and effort to become more and more skilled in working out your own wishes and plans in miniature...:-)Hugs, Liduina
Thank you for your kind words!!
DeleteI start to like the lighter softer blue more and more. It will be a lot of work making the whole floor like that, but it might be worth it =) Its a bit more fun than just plain white =)
I'm doing this for fun, but still I cant stop comparing my work to others and thinking that I'm a real amateur.. But this is my first time doing a whole house, so I hope I get better after awhile.. but I cant make that many houses, I don't have the room ;)
No tengas prisa.
Thank you Isabel! I just had to do something else for awhile and I might get started on this floor soon again, but you are right, I don't need to hurry =)
DeleteHi Hannah!
ReplyDeleteDon't worry! The same thing happens to everyone of us, every day: we compare our work with others... And everybody else has always better than ..
That is the way it is.
In my mind your floor now with the white-bluish color looks very suitable for the children room!

There is a saying in Sweden that goes like: The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence...
DeleteAnd that is so true =) Everyone else is so much better all the time.. =) Hope I can be everyone else for someone sometime ;)
Thanks for the link! I don't have a printer at this moment, but I might try to finish the blue-white floor at last! =)
Oh, I know so well, to come too quickly to a solution. It looks very stylish with checkered floor. I can follow your consideration, that the checkered flooring can be too much with toys and very clearly floor.
ReplyDeleteIf the floor is blue checkered, maybe you can choose the color of the toy so that it fits to the floor!!!!
Ludinas proposal is a good idea.

Thank you! I always have a hard time deciding, I'm afraid I will make the wrong decision, but what's wrong and what's right anyway =)
DeleteI agree with Liduina! I think it would look really nice if you continued the checkered pattern for the rest of the floor. I think since you wiped the paint away before it was totally dry- it gave it a nice aged effect. Which could help that "messy" look you were worried about a lot!
ReplyDeleteAnother idea... after you are done with whatever you decide- you could always make a rug! If the floor DOES end up being too busy, I solid rug will calm it down a bit. So don't get discouraged! This whole thing is a learning process and you are doing fantastic!
X -Blake
Thank you so much Blake! To have a "rescue" plan will surely help me finishing the floor, then I can always try a BIG rug if I wont get pleased with the result =)
DeleteThis is such a clever idea of X-blake; using a rug to calm things down when a room becomes too busy. I'll keep that in mind.....good luck with continuing on painting the floor, Hannah!
DeleteI also liked the floor with the light blue. And I think you are a skilled miniaturist! You really shouldn't compare yourself with others - I'm good at doing that myself and then I always feel really bad... but I think everyone has their strengths and weaknesses.
I can never look at other people's work either. It is definitely a confidence killer!
ReplyDeleteI love imperfect floors with gaps. I usually thin my white or brown paint down with water so my wood grain shows through. You could go and sand the floor if you really like that shabby chic look. Leave a lot of white but have some wood showing. Then you can put an aging glaze over the entire thing. You'd be surprised at how much character that adds. My recipe for aging is 1 part black paint, 2 parts brown paint and at least 7-10 part water(you want it liquidy yet able to deposit color).
I'd keep doing the squares too.
But do what makes you happy. Otherwise it's not fun to work on. Hope you find an idea.
hugs♥,
Caroline
Thank you! I thought I didn't really like the shabby chic look, not for myself anyway, I have always thought it was pretty when others has it, but I thought it wasn't my style.. But I might have to reconsider =) I did try some light brown watercolours on the white, and I think I like it, I will keep trying with these floors =) Thanks for the encouragement =)
DeleteYour floor is perfect imperfection! Please don't paint over but finish the faded and worn blue squares, they look like they have seen many feet walk over them.
ReplyDeleteThank you! I did some more faded squares today =) It will take a long time until I'm done I think, but I hope I will be pleased with the result when its done =)
DeleteHi Hannah, I agree with the others, you're doing a great job! I also really like the faded squares a lot too and it fits well for a childrens playroom, and Blakes idea of a rug might really solve the messyproblem if that might occur. Please don't be intimidated by anyone else, if we would stop because someone else does something better than we do, we can all stop and worse: there'd be VERY LITTLE great things in the world to admire that people admire today, in any style and sort of art! And remember that everything you make is yours and yours alone, and for that reason only already very special. I always admire different styles and everything has it's own appeal. I think you're doing great and can also admire your enthousiasm and trying, always keep trying. And maybe it's an idea to look at your first work, to see how far you've come along? Always helps me to look back and to see what a difference there is between what I made at first (not even in my blog...) and what I make now. Keep up the good work Hannah!
ReplyDeleteSomething I like to add: looking at others can also give you the inspiration to take your own work to a new level if you want it to. It was the work of others that made me look at the things I had done a few years ago - before blogging - differently and thinking how I could be better and it changed the quality of what I did completely! So if what others do make you want to be more like that, try to look what they do that you can learn from, what do they use, use their knowledge/trials and errors/tricks if available or what they make and what makes it good, or what you like about them. And see what you can use from that, combining things from different miniaturists can make you become more and more the best of YOU (you being the most important thing). All within what you feel comfortable with, and most importantly: what you like doing. Hope that helps a bit..
ReplyDeleteThank you for some very kind and wise words! Most the time I do get inspired by others, I see thinks and think, that is beautiful, I want one too =) And then I try, and sometimes I'm pleased with the result, but sometime I'm not. But I most try to focus on the fun parts, and the making, and not the result. I do things because I can't help myself =) I have to have something in my hands all the time, and creating miniatures are a way of life I guess. But I focus to mush on the result, but I hope to change that now =)
DeleteThat's very understandable Hannah and it's human to get disencouraged once in a while and then others just remind us to believe in what we do and we're right on track again :)
DeleteYou are so right creating miniatures being a way of life, great isn't it? Although others might think we're nuts 'obsessing' over making little things, but that's okay ;)
