I have been wanting to start working on a wizard for my Fantasy project for years now, but never got to it. But finally, I took out the doll clay, a present from some years ago, still unopened... and remember I have to wait for my daughter to go to sleep, I can't concentrate with her hanging over my shoulders... so back in the drawer again....
But then I went looking in another small drawer, that said, old doll parts.. Here I throw doll parts that I haven't made a body for, yet, or parts I don't really like.. well, that's almost every doll I try to make... (except one, that I gave away)
I found this weird looking head. I have redone it at least one time, but I was still unhappy with it, but I thought it might work as a crazy looking wizard. So I started choosing hair. Wool, seemed best for this one, and then I see, it's not a wizard, its a witch!! Well.. I wanted a wizard, not a crazy looking one, a nice one.. but I ended up with a crazy looking witch.. I suppose that can happen when you try to work with magic, when you are a novice, like me..
I hope I will finish this crazy witch. Her eyes.... and eyebrows... and her whole face... Not like I want it, but hey, who am I to judge a poor old lady...
I have to help her get some clothes.
And I would love to have a beautiful fairy. But I realize I'm not a great doll-maker, and started looking at ebay, wow!! wonderful faries.. but high prices, off course, when they look like real people... so I'm back to me making one again.. let's see how that turns out. Maybe I'll get a wizard next time ;)
This is my witch so far. She needs a skirt too. And I just made her some feet =)
And I opened that doll clay and tried making a young woman, I got a body, but then I just couldn't get a head to match it. I tried three times and every time I ended up with a male.. Why is females harder to make? And I did try to make a baby, but guess what, I ended up making a man, with a moustache...

That's when I gave up a bit and ordered a sculpey mold on ebay. I would love to get it now, but I have to wait a couple of weeks =(
Maybe I should try to finish the dolls I started until then =) I don't dare to show them to you, yet.. Maybe later =)

Looks like you are your hardest critic... don't judge your work too hard... I am convinced this witch was a wizard until a potion experiment went wrong... ;O) And believe me - the fairymakers you admired while looking on eb*y weren't showing their first attempts... they needed a lot of practise too to reach that level. So don't give up and continue with this lovely, crazy witch... she deserves being finished. And get your clay out and start to create... and accept that sometimes it's the clay deciding what you're getting out of it... ;O)

I might be a bit too hard on myself, but you are all so nice to me, I have to balance it up... ;) I can get really mad at myself when I'm not satisfied with my work, I stopped trying to do dolls for several years.. But maybe I should start trying again. I want quick result, if my first doll isn't good, I want the second one to be good, and the third one great ;) Maybe I just need to allow more tries, and follow the clay =)
DeleteI think you are right with your last comment Hannah. You need to keep trying until you can create what you want. Your witch is well worth finishing. I think you have the skills to create your wizard and fairy. Maybe it will just take a few attempts. Many great artists have learnt more through their failures than their successes. I look forward to seeing more characters in your future blog posts, starting with your finished witch. Perhaps she can be the wizards neighbour.
DeleteThank you! I will keep trying, and finish the witch, she has already moved in to my Fantasy box, I had nothing to say about that ;) But maybe I will make a wizard one day too, maybe the witch would invite him in, or I might have to build more scenes...
DeleteI like your witch very much, Hannah, and I agree with Birgit that sometimes the clay decides what you're getting, but that's OK too. You can use all of the different characters you create for different scenes--how fun! xo Jennifer
ReplyDeleteThanks Jennifer! I'll try to focus on the fun, and not the perfect (that noone can actually make) result =)
DeleteEstoy de acuerdo en que eres demasiado crítica contigo misma,la bruja me parece muy bien hecha y también es divertido que la arcilla,a veces, decida por ella misma que hacer!!!!
ReplyDeleteBesos.
Thank you, I might just have to follow the clay in the future =)
DeleteHi Hannah! I fully agree with Birgit, you just have to try it again. I have made so much failures and sometimes I succeed to make a doll out of the clay, but they are never how I wished for! Whilst I am sculpting I always let the clay self decide what kind of doll it will become. I go with the flow..and I just see how it will go.
ReplyDeleteCan you remember my doll 'Sientje' of my blog? She is a doll, which I made years ago, she was a big failure (I thought) and I wanted to throw her away, but finally I've finished her with some clothes and a hairdo......now she is not quite a beauty, but she has got a whole character of her own :D! Keep on trying to sculpt dolls, Hannah, don't give up!
I like your witch, give her some nice clothes and some accessories and you'll see, she is okay! Don't be too hard for yourself.
We all need a lot of practice before we are able to do what we want to do!
Have a nice weekend! Hugs, Ilona
Yes Sientje was so cute I wanted to try making dolls again. Maybe we just can't decide what it will be, the clay decides for us, but it's nice when we can use the doll for a scene later =) I have to keep filling my "doll parts" drawer =)
DeleteHope you are having a nice weekend too =)
Thank you Tatiana! I will keep trying, I can always save the dolls for future projects, and hopefully I can compare dolls in the future and see that I made progress =)
DeleteHej!
DeleteI agree with many of the people here Hannah!! You are too hard on you and surely, nobody was born already knowing how to clay or how to make things!!! The only and it really is the only way of getting better is to do bad and make mistakes at the start. Almost every single time I make something I make mistakes and I learn from them. Next time I know not to do it again or to do it in a different way. When I make mistakes then I also feel down and defeated and feel not to continue with the creation of the item but then I remind myself that if I want to get better I need to do it more and more and more. And do you know what? It's not just you learning from your mistakes but also all the people that read your posts!! Your doll is just fine and if you consider that is not even finished, than it's great!!! Give yourself some credit and wait for the final results before bashing yourself!! We like it....don't you??
ReplyDeleteThank you for your wise words Simona! I have to admit the doll is starting to grow on me, she isn't perfect, or what I expected, but she is now a person of her own, and deserves to get finished =)
DeleteMy dear Hannah, I think you are very talented! You should continue to work on your art if it makes you happy! Practice makes perfect and even if your first trials are not to your liking, you can still improve on your skills! The good part about creating your own dolls is that you are totally in control of what you want your doll to be. Nobody can do that for you. It's a great thing to be talented like that! I hope you'll create a lot more!
ReplyDeleteThank you Jane!! I wish I had control over the dolls I make ;) I often have a picture in my head, but it's hard to get it like that.. But maybe I just need more practise!
DeleteThansk for your comment and advice! :) I just love this doll. It's so lively :)
ReplyDeleteYou are welcome =) Thanks you for your comment too! I'm glad you like my doll =)
