I made a couch

Over a year ago I started thinking about making a couch. But what type? And which colour? It took me a year to figure out what I wanted, and then I finally got started before Easter. I did a drawing and I decided to make it out of thick cardboard, fabric and sponges (foam rubber). It took me some more time than I had planned, and now after I wish I had done some things differently, but I feel very happy to finally be done with this!

These are the parts I used + cushions made from the sponges.
I've already put fabric on the sides on this picture, the sides are also made of cardboard, I used double cardboard for that.

Konrad tried the couch while I was working on the cushions. He is a bit cranky, he has been asking for clothes for years.. So I started making him some bib-and-brace overalls, not what he was asking for.. But I could need a hand with the building, so fancy clothes has to wait for later =)

The pregnant Lisbeth is very pleased to have a couch to relax in.

I even tried out the couch in the house, but the house is such a mess, still.. I have to fix the window, and I wanted to polish the floor, and I have to take out all the things just lying around.. Much to do, but this house is my "forever-project" so I have no rush =)

Hope you all had a great Easter! I did, only bad thing was that it ended too fast... =)
Take care
Hannah

  3. A very lovely sofa - doesn't look like a first attempt at all. But I can understand what you were saying, I think we all know this learning by doing process... but there's an easy solution for this: Try your new-learnt skills with a second couch... ;O) And what a clever idea to get yourself a helper by giving him work clothes!

    1. Thank you Birgit! I have done a few couches before, one of leather and some fabric. But not this model, and I used a drawing from a book for that, it was fun to draw my own design now. But I felt like this was a one time thing, I got sick of it before I really started.. But maybe, I could do another one now that I have a drawing and know how to (and know what not to do..) =)

    1. Thank you! The sponges makes it soft and comfortable, first I thought of making it easy for me and only using cardboard, but then I thought the dolls have to have a comfortable couch =)

    1. Thanks Jane!! I have always been a bit "afraid" of making furniture =) I thought it takes a lot of tools and space and make the whole house full of dust.. and that you have to use wood! But I'm glad I gave the cardboard a chance, it was simple for me, and it doesn't show since I covered it all with fabric =)
Maybe I'll dare to do more furniture now, we have to wait and see.. I do work on some cupboards for the kitchen, but that's wood, and wood is not really my element.. takes forever to get anywhere =)

  14. Wow Hannah, your couch looks gorgeous, and I love the fabric you chose, I understand what you mean by after I wish I had done some things differently, it happens to me all the time, but this couch realy looks perfect to me.
I always want to make so many things, but most off the time I can´t get startet, because it takes so many time to figur out how and where to start and to find all the things I need out off all the stuff I collectet over the years :)
    Have a wonderfull Sunday.

I have troubles getting started too =) And I save too much, so I never find what I need, out of all the materials I collect =) But it is nice to be able to do things in my own speed, hope you manage to do all the things you want to =) (or at least a few of them..) =)

  15. You are doing furniture! That's terrific. I never thought I could do furniture either. But you can. If you use veneer wood it is as easy as cardboard. I think now that you saw you could do the couch you will have the confidence to try more and more stuff. The couch looks great.
